Our union blossomed from the roots of love and support of our dearest family and friends. With that in mind, we we would be honored to have you participate in our ceremony, inspired by the meetings of the Society of Friends, also known as Quakers. A Quaker meeting is a simple gathering based on a shared silence, which is punctuated — sometimes frequently and sometimes not — by the words of those who feel moved to speak.
We will begin our wedding ceremony as many do with a procession. When finished, Shannon's brother Jon will explain how the ceremony will proceed. After a shared period of silence, Erik and Shannon will make declarations to each other and return to silence. At that time, anyone is invited to stand and share their thoughts — words of wisdom, prayers for us, a funny story, whatever feels poignant. A few designated people will share prepared remarks.
While there is no right way to participate, here are some guidelines to consider:
We hope our collective mindfulness in that beautiful space will be an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the love and community that brings us together. We will close with an exchange of rings and honor our multicultural heritage.
